HAWKE'S BAY JOCKEY CLUB'S SPRING RACE MEETING.
There was not a large attendance at Hastings to-day. The grand stand Avas crowded, but thero were few on the course. Thero Avas a constant fall of rain. haavkk's bay guineas. Of 105 soys, 1 mile. Captain Russell's br f Escopota, Sst 51b 1 Messrs C. and J. Nairn's b c Oberon, Bst lOlbs 2 Mr AY. Douglas' eh g Briar, Sst 51bs .. 3 —Snider and Marjory were scratched. The other four horses were sent away to a good start, Jacob springing off Avith the lead, but he Avas soon passed by Escopeta, Avho finally won hands down. Coming into the straight Escopeta Avas challenged by Oberon, Avhoso jockey worked hard but Avithout success, the horses coming i'l as above, Jacob a bad fourth. HANDICAP HURDLK RACE. Of 75 soys., about 2 miles. Mr Reihaiia's b g Doubtful, 9s 121bs .. 1 Mr T. Gilpin's eh g Pastime, 9st Tibs .. 2 Mr AY. Douglas' br g Loch Lomond, list 71bs 3 AVaowactika Avas scratched. Doubtful mado the running right through, closely followed by Loch Lomond until the straight Avas reached, Avhen Pastimo gave a fine challenge, coming in a good second. Reform was in tho rear throughout. At the first hurdle AVild Dayrcll and Juliet fell, and the latter gave up the race. Dayrell's jockey quickly remounted, but had no show after his mishap. At the third hurdle the first time round Fear Not fell. Lone Hand looked promising at first, but his Aveight told against him the second time round. He took all tho hurdles without baulking once. SPRING HANDICAP, Of 200 soys., 1.1 miles. Mr P. Martin's eh h Leonato, Sst 3lbs.. 1 Captain Russell's eh f Leonora, Sst lOlbs 2 Mr Reihaiia's b g The Laird, 7st Slbs .. 3 A grand race. AVon by about a head after a desperate struggle between the two first horses.
