SUNDAY TRAINS.
[To the Editor of the Daily Telegraph.] Sir, —I saw in your issue of yesterday a paragraph tantamount to a complaint against the injustice of the Minister of Railways in not sanctioning the request _of the Chamber of Commerce in connection with the running of a train from Napier to Hastings, us your article says. Your morning eomtemporary, however, is more explicit iulidmitting- that the train was to bo from Hastings to Napier. The action of the members of the Chamber is truly disinterested, seeing that only a few are tradesmen, and the rest rely on the business capacities of Napier for their income, so you sec, MiEditor, that it cannot matter to them which way tlio train runs. Further, you quote "other towns." lamin a position to nay that they only include places whose relative difference in size and importance is vastly superior to that between Hastings and Napier. I think the Minister, in refusing to countenance the request, has considered the welfare of the country as worthy of bcinir taken into account as well as that of the town. But to the point, Hastings is now well, perhaps over well, supplied with tradesmen in every line of business, and perfectly able to supply the wants of the surrounding neighbourhood. Hitherto a large portion of tho commerce of Napier has been derived from country districts, and seeing this gradually alienated by tho growth of Hastings, the members already mentioned are anxious to regain lost ground, and this is their first effort towards that end. I am justified in saying that such a measure will meet at anytime opposition, as tho tradesmen in this district will be unanimous in endeavouring to counteract what bids fanto be a flagrant infringement of their business rights.—l nm, &c, Fair Play. Hastings, September 22, 1883.
