Tlio following , inward correspondence was rend: — From Frasertown (telegram), applying to have a scullery added to the teacher's residence iv course of construction.—Tho secretary was instructed to re])ly that tho Board has granted the whole of the vote at its disposal. From Gisborne, asking that Miss Rosie's services as pupil teacher bo retained at a salary of £00 per annum.—Approved. From the same, enclosing account for £4 IGs, being half cost of erecting dividing fence at school property.—Passed for payment. From Matawhero, requesting that Mrs Harris, assistant mistress, be paid as from July, at which date she entered upon her duties.—Agreed that tho Board cannot sanction the payment for July, tho average attendance prior to August not warranting the appointment. From Meanee, stating that tho committee had failed to obtain any application to their advertisement for a pupil teacher in the place of Miss Poncock, resigned, and recommending that Mrs Naylor be appointod assistant mistress.—Some discussion took place as to what examination Mrs Naylor should bo required to pass, she not being a certificated teacher. It was ultimately agreed that Mrs Naylor bo temporarily appointed to tho position at a salary of £00 per annum. From tho Inspector, recommending tho grant of £10 to the Meaneo committee towards erecting protective works on tho banks of the Tutaekuri river.—Approved. From Moanee, applying for an oven for the master's residence.—Approved. -^ From Napier, recommending that tho tender of Mr John Morrison for painting and distempering the main school building bo accepted. Tho building inside at present was very gloomy.—Agreed that tho Board cminot grant tho committee's request at present, there being no funds avaihiblo, but will keep tho application before them with a view to having tho work done during tho Christmas holidays should funds bo available out of tho building grant. From Mr H. Henouf, accepting the scholarship grunted to his son at the district school, and arranging , to send his son to tho Nfipicr High School. From Mr J. Grubb, withdrawing his letter of 21st instant, on the ground that pupil touching was at present too severo for his daughter, and asking that the scholarship gained by her should bo mado tenable at the Girl's High School. —Approved. From Norsewood, applying for a watertank for tho school. —Approved. From Ormondvillo, recommending tho appointment of Miss Rosie as assistant mistress.—Approved. From tho Norsowood master, applying for payment of balance of his salary for last year.—Ordered to bo paid. From Patangafa, calling attention to tho unfinished state of tho school, and risking that a number of matters may bo seen to before the contractor leaves.—Referred to the Board's architect. From Port Ahuriri, asking to have the windows of (ho school furnished with Venntinn blinds.—Ordinary blinds to bo supplied, but to bo mado by girls attonding the school. _ / From tho same, reporting that tho compulsory clauses of tho Education Act had been enforced iv that district during the past three weeks with very satisfactory results, the attendance having increased 20 per cent., notwithstanding sickness of regular attendants, and the inclement woiithcr. —Approved. From residents at To Arai, asking to have a school established in that district. A sito would bo granted by Mr G. R. Johnston.-— Tho inspector was requested to visit tho district, and to make a report to the next meeting of the Board. From Mr James Hcbberloy, with respect to the proposed new Tarawera school, asking the Board to advanco £21 paid by him to sawyers for timber cut.— Agroedthat tho Board will contribute when tho building is sufficiently advanced for a progress payment. From the Education Department, in reply to tho Board's memo, re building -gran t for tho current year, stating that_ tho Government has not yet como to a decision on tho subject, but as soon as tho il)foi> matiou is available it will be supplied, FINANCE. The state of the Board's finance was reported as follows:—School fund, Cr., £1811 Ms lid; building fund, Dr., £91 10s 2d]; j scholarships, Cr., £48 17s fxl. It was decided that the secretary should make an arrangement with the manager of the bank for an overdraft to the extent of £1000 in the building fund to meet present requirements, such overdraft to be considered as taken from the school fund. WELLINGTON TEAINIJfG SCHOOL. The following letter and telegram from tho Education Department, in reply to enquiries mado by Mr Hill with respect to students attending the training- college at Wellington, were read:— Education Department, Wellington, September lltli, 1883. To the Secretary Education Board, Napier. Memorandum. —I have laid before tho Minister of Education your letter of tho 31st ulto. with reference to the paymentby Government of tho cost of maintaining additional ex-pupil teachers at Wellington training school. lam directed to refer you to my memo. N0.'376, of May tltli, 1883, and to say that under the circumstances thp utmost the Government can undortako is to pay at tho rate of £oO a yenr for two young wen on the completion of their pupil teachership under your Board for tho purposo _of enabling them to attend Wellington trainin»- school for tho session of Ibß4. liio following condition arc attached to this offer-—1 That tho Board's inspector of schools tun testify that they possess thoeo jualifications that givo promise of thenbeing efficient teachers. 2. That they undertake fo the Board to make public school i caching their profession.—John JJisior." Telegram.—To the secretary Education Board, Napier. The architect reported that the teacher's house at Makatokii, and the additions at Taradalc aud Port Ahuriri, were completed, and final certificates granted. The report proceeded as follows : — Extras to the extent of £6 have been incurred at M'tkatoku in with drainage, waste pipes, and replacing kitchen range with a colonial oven. The range has has-been sent to the schoolmaster s house at Olive. In connection with Taradalc and PcJft Almriri schools, extra works, incurred by enlarging the porches, additional depth of foundation blocks, repairs to tank, kc, are balanced by the sums allowed for con-

tiiiffeneies. Patangata.—This work being , now completed 1 have given a certificate for balance due, less •') per cent, to be retained in hand for two month. Sundry extra works were found to be absolutely necessary in order to place the house and school in a proper state of repair, and to render the house habitable. Gisborno.—The erection of the new infant school is progressing steadily, and the contractor hopes to have the work shortly completed. Erasertown.—The new school, and adorations to teacher's house, are nearly complotcd, and I have the honor to enclose a letter from the chairman in connection therewith. I may add that I examined the whole of the material before it was shipped from Napier. Waipawa.—The contract for bell cot and porch to school has been satisfactonly complotcd. . Meancc— The contract for additions to school house is completed, and IJiave certified for the balance due, less 5 per cent, to be retained in hand for two months.— I have, &c, Rout. MISCELLANEOUS. Mr White drew attention to a hitch that existed in connection with the- transmission by mil <>f children from To Ante attending the Kaikora school, and it was agreed that Mr Hill should interview ti.o railway manager on the subject, and endeavor to make some arrangement by which the dnicnlty might bo overcome in future. Mr Sidey moved that in all future recommendations for appointments of teachers made by the school committees the testimonials of all candidates be forwarded along ■with such recommendations. —Mr Williams seconded the motion, and it was carried without dissent. The Board then adjourned.
