HAWKE'S BAY COUNTY COUNCIL.
This Day. Tho Council met at 10.30 a.m. Present: Crs. F. Sutton, M.H.R. (chairman), J. A. Cunningham, G. Rymer, J. N. Williams, and J. G. Kinross. FINANCE. Vouchors for the month, including salaries and wages, £1214 Is Bd, Avere passed for payment. CORRESPONDENCE. The following inward correspondence Avas .-read: — From the Public Works Department (telegram) advising that £853 15s had been placed to credit of county account.—Tho Chairman said ho had Avritton asking for an additional £900 as imprest payment for the month, under the provisions of the Roads and Bridges Construction Act, but had not yet received any reply. He had communicated again this morning by telegraph urging the matter. From Mr R. MoDowall, Taradale, calling attention to tho dangerous state of the Rcdclyffo quarry.—Referred to road overseer. From Messrs Sainsbury and Logan (official notification) announcing the bankruptcy of Richard Wood, of Hastings.— The Chairman remarked that there Avas a matter of rates involved. From Mr Ambrose Potts, drawing attention to the portion of the Patea road between Kuripapanga and the Taraurau river, which Avas described as dangerous for dray traffic in its present state. A small expenditure would remedy the evil.—Agreed that tho necessary Avork be carried out. From the Inspector of Slaughter Houses, reporting that all private slaughter houses under his supervision have been properly conducted during tho month. From tho Engineer, reporting that he had observed branches and slips of Avilknvs iii different places taking root in tho river beds, and suggesting that they be removed. —Agreed to. TENDERS. Tho following tenders were accepted for works: —Forming twelve chains road at Potanc, 10s per chain, and fencing at 4 s Od per chain, A- O'Neill; cutting 40 chains drain at Petane, Od per cubic yard, Thomas McCormack ; metalling eight miles OmahuKuripapanga road, 4s Hid per cubic yard, Murphy and Pulford ; metalling about five miles ditto, 3s per cubic yard, Glendinning and Griffin. THE OMAHU-OKAAVA ROAD. Tho overseer reported that ho had examined the above road, in accordance Avith instructions, and would recommend that it bo raised four or five feet higher than the present roadway for a distance of SO chains by cutting in the solid 12 feet, and ulilising the materia] thus obtained on the old road so as to form a 15 feet roadway. Having examined as to straightening the creek through tho SAvamp he failed to see lioav tho small drain proposed would carry off the flood Avater so as to relieve the present roadway. The cost of 50 chains of drain, including flax cutting, Avould bo about £500. After some discussion it was agreed not to intercfei-c Avith the present roadway, but to instruct the engineer to call for tenders and to have the flax cut along that portion liable to floods to mark what effect it will havo upon it. OVERSEER'S REPORT. The following report was received from the road overseer: Napier-To Ante Road.—l havo examined flooring of the Ngaruroro-Clive bridge, and find the centre planking very much worn and Avido apart. I beg to recommend that eight feet of the centre flooring be removed at a cost of about £180. Tho bad Sortions of tho road by tho river bank at albraith's corner, Clive, havo been made good by planting Avillows. The authorised necessary repairs to portions of this road between Paki Paki raihvay crossing and Te Auto are being proceeded with, This r °ad is in fair order for traffic. Havelock-Omahußoad.— That contractor has not commenced work on the re-forming of a portion of this road near Captain Russell's gate, although his tender Avas accepted before last meeting of Council. Hastings-Hampden Road. —I beg to recommend that two surfacemen be employed on the Maraekakaho-Hampdcn road to fill up ruts and clean out water-tables at a cost of about £20. Tareha's Bridge-Hakawai Road.—Tho necessary metal repairs to this road have been carried on during the month where required. The fence to protect the road by tho river bank near Hakawai is completed, as anthorised. This road is in good order for. traffic. HakawaiyMangawliare Road.—l have examined this road (latply taken over by the .(Council), and bog to recommend U.-'J-*: tenders be called for motel repairs, and also that £60 be expended in culverts so as to give proper drainage. I further beg to recommond that a sufaceman's whare be erected at the Konlni stream. Manga wharo — Taraurau Road. — The Wfuce repairs to this road have been attended to in a satisfactory manner during the last month, and as a surface road it is in fair order for traffic.
Pulfotitiri Bush Road.—l beg to draw your attention to this road running through the bush between Speedy's clearing and Mr jTallott's station, the Umber of which has been felled one chain Avide, and nine small bridges erected. To mako the road fit for traffic it requires an expenditure of £100 to form side cuttings. Apley Sheep Yards-Patoka Station Road.—This road having been taken over by tho Council I bog to recommend that tenders bo called for metal repairs, and that £50 bo expended in culverts so as to givo the road proper drainage. NewTaradale-Omahu Road.—The contractor for Avidening a portion of this road near the railway crossing has mado good progress during the month. Tho authorised repairs to tho bridge on this road are completed, and the necessary metal repairs attended too where required. Tho road is in very fair order for traffic. AVestern Spit-Kiawaka Road.—The authorised repairs to the Petane bridge are completed, and tho road is in very fair order for traffic.
Petane-AVairoa Road.—Tho metalling of a section of this road between the blacksmith's shop and Kiamatc store is making progress. The contractor forexcavatng drain to drain county road near the native pa has commenced, and also the road for-
mation running through native Potation. I bog to recommend that all willo* tiees washed down in time of floods m the lutackuri river be removed so as to keep the water running in its old. bed It will greatly assist in preserving the bank, particularly where running along the county roads.—l have, ko., John Tracy, Road Overseer. The various recommendations in the report were all agreed to. _ In tho absence of Cr. Dolbel the notice ot motion standing in his name with respect to taking over the Potoka road to its junction with the Petane riding was postponed until next meeting. The Council then adjourned.
