Mr S. Hooper has at his establishment in Hastings street a duckling that was hatched i with four logs. The little monster did not live long. The odd pair of legs grow from the breast, and look as though the hindquarters of another duckling wore attached " to the main bird. A double-yoked egg accounts for the enormity.
They have got a funny way of "repairing " the roads between Tarelia's bridge and Waitangi. Dray traffic, following in the same trade, has worn deep ruts, in which of course the water lies, and a man has been employed to cut little drains for this water to escape, but no attempt has been made to fill the ruts up. Tho first dray that goes along of course destroj's tho lilliputian drains, and the road is as bad aa over.
Much dissatisfaction has boon expressed by true sportsmen at the prolongation of tho shooting season for nativo gamo to a month beyond the period appointed for imported gamo. The sen son for tho latter terminated on July 31, while for nativo game the season wan extended to tho end of August. It is a fact that all through that month ducks were sitting, and many scores were shot off their nests. At tho present time, only a fortnight since tho season closed, hundreds of ducklings can be seen in tho swamps.
There were two taps of the fire bell last night a little beforo ten o'clock, that caused some excitement and gnvo another opportunity for the brigade to show its smartness. An electric alarm had come from the White-road, and in an astonishingly short time numerous members of tho brigade iipjicarcd in uniform, a cab drovo uj) for the horses to be harnessed to tho engine, and everything was in readiness to cope / with, a conflagration. Fortunately the 1 services of the brigade were not required, j tho cause of alarm being a chimney on fire, J which was quickly suppressed. A Persons who suffer from sleeplessness. Extract from Colonial Printers' Art Journal, Sydney, August 31st, 1882: — "The Daily Telegjiapii, Napier, N.Z., has favoured us with a number of Specimens, .md they certainly are tlio best colonial that we have yet received ; they all have a modern appearance, being got up with excellent taste, and are superior to the majority of job work done in Sydney. A quadruple small card for the Hawko's Bay Poultry and Canary Association is a capital piece of work, in mauve, gold, and rosine. The consumption of gas by the Otto gas engine is guaranteed to be 20 to 70 per cent. Jess than in any other gas engines. The new pattern halfhorse power nominal Otto's patent indicates up to two-horse power, is tho lowest priced, most economical, and best gas engine in tho market.
