MEAT PRESERVING WORKS IN QUEENSLAND DESTROYED BY FIRE.

FRESH CASE OF SMALL-POX IN QUEENSLAND.

ARRIVAL OF STEAMER AT BRISBANE WITH MEASLES AND TYPHOID FEVER ON BOARD.

BRISBANE. Thursday. Tho meat preserving works at Rockham pton were totally destroyed by fire to-day. Tho loss is estimated at £90,000, of which £25,000 is covered by insurance. The following arc tho policies held by New Zealand offices ,—Colonial Insurance Company of New Zealand, £2100, three-fourths of which is re-insured ; United Insurance Company and South British each £2100 ; New Zealand Insurance Company _ £2200, of which £575 sre re-insured ; Union Insurance Company of New Zealand, £.3000 ; National Insurance Company of New Zealand, £1000. The remainder is held by English offices. The works were situated at Lake Creek. Tho entire works, comprising several large buildings, were totally destroyed, only some machinery being saved. A cargo of frozen meat, which had been prepared for tho steamer Fiado, was also consumed.

This day. The first estimate of £90,000 as tho loss by tho firo at Rockampton is over-stated. It is now believed that £40,000 will cover the damage done. A fresh case of small-pox has occurred amongst those in quarantine from tho steamship Duke of Westminster. The person attacked was one of tho stevedores of the vessel.

The steamship Nowshcrra has arrived hero from London, with seventy cases 'of measles and typhoid fever on board, and has been ordered into quarantine.
