SPORTING NOTES BY "HIPPO."
There was a doubt amongst ownors and trainers tho other morning as to whether there was any penalty attached to the New Zealand Cup. The doubt camo about through the sporting editor of tho Canterbury Times stating that he did not think Welcome Jack and other horses engaged in the Now Zealand Cup would start for tho Geraldino Cup, as, by winning it, they world incure a penalty for the New Zealand Cup. Mr M. 11. Smith telegraphed to the .secretary of the Canterbury Jockey Club yesterday morning, asking whether a horse iiicurred'any penalty in the Cup by winning races since the weights came out. The reply was no, so that owners and trainers may set their minds at rest on that snbject.
I am sorry to bear that Foul Play is not likely to start. I believe his owner intends ;o put him to the stud again. He has been ooking and going well, and his trainor thought he had a good thing on.
