August 5, ISB3. At a meeting of the ladies of St. Peter's (Catholic) Church, held last week, it was decided to hold a lea meeting, fancy fair, and dance the night before the races, in Janu try next. There wa.- a very fair attendance at the Mechanic's Institute on Thursday night, ■when several reading and recitations were given by the members. The Rev. Mr Goodyear read Cowper's "Arrival of the Mailman," and the reading Avas criticised by Messrs Large aud Pcnty. Mr Williams read a poll ion of Shakespeare's "Merchant of Venice: " he was criticised by Rev. Mr Goodyear, Messrs Pcnty and Large. Mr Peuty read "Mr Bulterwick's Horse," by Max Adeler, and was criticised by Messrs Porter (chairman), Williams, Sargisson, and Large. Mr Largo gave a recitation, " The Eve of Waterloo," criticised by Rev. Mr Goodyear and Mr "Williams. Mr Sargisson read Charles Dickens' description of the proceedings of "The Brick-lane Junction Temperance Association;" the reading was criticised by -Messrs Pcnty, Lariro and Williams. Mr P. Loughran recited a long Scotch piece entitled " Sir James the Ross," Avhich showed that he has considerable retentive faculties.

Several of the natives who contributed to the fund for sending Sydney Taiwhanga as an embassy to the Queen are beginning to repent of their liberality, and wish they had their money back again. Sydney got very nearly £o0 from the Wairoa natives. August 8. On Sunday night I observed a meteor of great brilliance and size in the northeastern sky. It shot across the sky towards the west, leaving a long train of light bohind. Mr T. M'Ananam.i, who died in the Napier Hospital on Saturday last, left a good deal of property here.
