THE DIAMOND MANIA.
CinusTCHURCH, This day
At a general meeting of shareholders m the Pioneer Diamond Company last night, Mr Kelsey's last cable was read as follows : —" Great authority says specimens received deceptive, and suggests immediate sinking for larger specimens, which forward to me sharply. Reply also when sent." This is the continuation of the reply to a telegram from Christchurch which was as follows: — "Most important you should telegraph immediately whether stones are diamonds. Use your code." The first part of Mr Kelsey's reply was, " Diamonds have been tested by competent authority, who declares a fair proportion genuine. Cabling the result of the cutting on Friday and the value." The continuation "is therefore taken to mean that though the diamonds are genuine the cutting has reduced their size so much that their value could not be ascertained. It is thought that Mr Kelsey would not have gone to the expense of cabling, as he has done, a full message and not using his code, or recommended the expense of deeper sinking, were the stones not diamonds.
