POLITICAL NEWS.

[by telegraph.]

[from oue own correspondent. J Wellington, This day

Tho House will meet in future on Mondays fov Government business, so as to expedite matters. That this is very necessary is obvious from the state of the Order Paper, which has been a formidable sheet of lato, and docs not seem at all inclined to diminish its goodly proportions. The natives have rather a clever way of getting at members. They quietly put damaging charges in a j)etition, and no they run a very good chance of having a shot at members without the latter's intention being directed to the matter at all. Mr Sheehan last night claimed privilege for one which made a serious charge against him, and for which he wanted the fullest possible enquiry, I do not know that I ever saw the Galleries more crowded than they were last night on the occasion of Mr Bryce moving the second reading of his Native Land Bill. Some time ago I gave such an outline of the policy of this bill that I am inclined to think I should quarrel with myself for forestalling myself on this occasion, that I have actually cut away the ground from my own feet. Those who expected something bold and sensational have accordingly been disappointed. There is no doubt but the bill will be satisfactory to most membors except those who are extremists, but that will not prevent much debating on the subject. The annexation question was vigorously debated in the Council yesterday, and with greater unanimity than was the case in the Assembly.
