July 18. j All ma ils passing through the Suez Canal, after being disinfected at the sea fortress at Brindisi, will be forwarded on. The passengers will be quarantined at Provcglia. July 19. The Comte de Chambord is improving in health. The strike which it was feared w.is about to tiiko place among the ironworkers at Stafford has been abandoned. Tho Porte disputes tho existence of the alleged Do Lesseps monopoly, arguing that it is limited to the present canal. July 20. Two hundred deaths have occurred at Cairo from cholera. A cordon has been placed round Alexandria with a view to excluding refugees from infected places. The telegraph operators in America are out on strike, and serious inconvenience is being felt. Mr Leonard 11. Courtney, M.P., one of the Assistant Secretaries to the Treasury, has stated in the House of Commons that the next Reform Bill will extend the franchise to women. Sir Arthur Gordon is writing a book on the habits of tho Fijians. French bankers are offering Baron de Lesseps the iiecessiiry capital to construct tho second canal across the Isthmus of Suez.
