On Mr Feldwick's motion the Chattels Securities Bill was read a second time and referred to a select committee. GOLD DUTY ABOLITION HILL. Mr Seddon moved the second reading of tho Gold Duty Abolition Bill, which was opposed by the Minister for Mines and Mr Fish, but supported by Mr DeLautour, MiFergus, Mr Shaw, Mr Munro, Mr Petrie, Mr Smith, Mr McDonald, Mr Duncan, and Mr J. 0. Brown. Mr Shcehan only supported it if it was mado permissive to local bodies. On a division the second reading was carried by 21 to 17. The House rose at 10.40. This day. NATIVE LAND COMPANY'S BILL. On the New Zealand Native Laud Company's Bill being called on, Mr De Lautour said that the Government having intimated to him that they objected to this bill on the grounds of general policy, and that ho recognised that they had a right to make such an objection, he would ask the House to postpone the second reading for a week, so that the Government might in the meantime consider that, if all the clauses relating to public matters were struck out, and only the first four clauses of the bill, which related eutirely to matters personal to the company, the Government would allow those clauses to proceed. If the Government objected he would abandon the bill altogether. Major Atkinson agreed to the postponement, and promised to consider the bill in its revised shapo. The second reading was postponed for a week.
