A NOVEL USE FOR COTTON REELS.
Empty cotton reels arc not usually looked upon as articles of utility or beauty, nevertheless a collection of them can be metamorphosed, by any ingenious girl, into both. Three or four dozen reels of an equal size, then, we will start with. They must be one colour, black or white, it does not matter so long as uniformity is maintained, and wo will construct a miniature bookcase capable of containing a modest library. Pour thin iron rods or strong rounded sticks will do as ■well, about 18 or 20 inches in length; on each side of these thread 8 reels. Now, in a smooth piece of wood, deal, or pine, bore 4 holes, two at each end, thread tho stick or iron through, and shelf number one is formed ; more reels aro added according to materals. In order that tho reels shall not tumble off, a small knob is fixed at tho cud of each stick, forming feet for tho bookcase as well. Now, as our home-made furniture looks rath or rough, wo must use our decorative faoulties, so with some black enamel paint wo coat tho reels and shelves, allow it to dry thoroughly, and should it be necessary apply a second time, when a nice glossy black Towards our labour. Next with some liquid gold paint gild tho rim of each reel, and if you aro not pleased with your obony and gold bookcase, you must be a very unreasonable young lady indeed.
