June 21. At the wool sales to-day 8,500 bales were offered, and the market continued steady but inactive. Since the opening of tho series 31,250 bales have been withdrawn. The sales close to-morrow. Up to date 310,000 bales have been sold, and 20,000 held over for the next scries. Cross-breds, for all except the finest qualities, close at Id to Id lower than the closing rates of last series. Lambs wool have suffered a similar decline during the present series. The first portion of 352 quarters of beef per Lady Jocelyn, from Wellington, was placed in the market to-day, and realised tjd to 0 : }-d. The meat is in good condition. " In tho House of Commons to-day Sir Henry James, Attorney-General, announced that the Government had decided to drop for the present session.the bill for amending the Acts relating to criminal procedure, which provided inter alia for the establishment of Court of Criminal Appeal. June 22. In a letter recently addressed to Lord Randolph Churchill, with reference to the Egyptian rebellion, Mr Gladstone indicates that tho Khedive was the author of the massacre of Europeans perpetrated in Alexandria in July last year. It has been ascertained that the announce* ment of Mr William Gurdon's appointment as British Envoy to the Transvaal was premature.
