PUBLIC MEETING AT PORANGAHAU

A public meeting of gentlemen interested in tho prevention of the spread of the rabbit pest from tho southern boundary of the province into Hawke's Bay was held at Poraugahau at 2 p.m. yesterday. Present: Messrs J. Mackersey (in the chair), D. V~ McLean, W. Newman, A. McHardy, T. ' Crosse, A. K. Lyons, G. Speedy, G. Hunter, R. Hunter, J. Mackie, J. White, C. Lambert, W. Ramsden, J. Franklin, W. Speedy, C. Herbert, J. Speedy, R. Pasloy, It. Johnson, D.M. Luckie, J. Bisset, T. Siteman, A. H. Price, and the Rev. F. E. T. Simcox. These gentlemen represented 400,000 sheep. Tho following resolutions were passed: — 1. That, in tho opinion of this meeting, the sheopfarmers of the provincial district of Hawke'a Bay agree to pay an annual rate not exceeding one farthing per sheep depastured on their respective lands to form a fund for the destruction of rabbits entering tho district from the south. 2. That a committee, consisting of Messrs A. H. Price, T. Crosso, J. Handysido, G. Speedy, and G. Hunter, be appointed, with full powers to collect the rate for the year, and take any action they may deem necessary to protect tho southern district from the encroachment of the rabbits. 3. That tho proprietor of the Akiteo run be requested to allow any men that may be employed by tho committee to enter his property for the purpose of protecting tho boundary. 4. That tho Government be requested to destroy the rabbits on the waste lands of the Crown adjoining the southern boundary of the Hawke's Bay district. 5. That the members of the Hawke's Bay district be requested to solicit the Govornment to destroy tho rabbits on the wasto lands of the Crown on tho provincial boundary of Hawke'u Bay at Akiteo, and to endeavor to obtain a grant-in-aid as a subsidy to privato contributions. 6. That a public meeting of the sheep farmers of tho [provincial district be called at Waipawa on the 4th July, at 11 a.m., to receive reports of the proceedings of the meeting at Porangahau that day.—(By tolegraph, own correspondent.)
