Mr W. C. Smith, M.H.R., proceeds to Wellington overland on Monday next, addressing his constituents at Woodville en route. Mass will be celebrated by the Rev. J. L. Ahem at Ormondville at 11 a.m. on Sunday next, when the new Catholic Church will be opened for Divine service. AYe have been requested, on behalf of Mr Tanner, to say that there is no truth in the report that he is favorable to tho removal of the Hawke's Bay County Council offices from Napier to Hastings. Sydney Taiwhanga, whose fame is well known to most people, is now paying a visit to the natives in the AVaipawa district, whero he is relating his experiences in England, and preaching land loagucism. He had a long horcro at AVaipawa pa yesterday, and pi'occeds shortly to Hapuku's pa, aud from thence to some pa nearer Napier. The trustees of tho AVaipawa, recreation ground held a meeting yesterday, Messrs Rathbone, McGrcevy, Bibby, and Harding being present. Sister Mary Joseph has been appointed by Bishop Redwood to help tho sisters of St. Joseph's, at Wanganui, to establish a Maori school at Hiruherama (Jerusalem), a native settlement np tho AA r anganui river. Sister Mary Joseph will also be extremely useful to the natives of that part of the country on account of her experience and ability in medicinal practice. AYe are glad to hear that, at the committee meeting of the Jockey Club yesterday, it was resolved to introduce a Hack Hurdle race at the Spring meeting in October. A hack hurdle race is always a popular event in any programme, and our Hawke's Bay meetings have been singularly fortunate in introducing to tho racing world some excellent jumpers through this medium. Cr. Graham has given notice to movo at the noxt sitting of the Municipal Council, "That, in order to reduce expenditure in respect of municipal elections, tho duties of returning officer in future bo performed by some officer of the Council to be appointed for tho purpose, and that movablo voting stalls bo made so as to bo easily orcctcd at any time by the Council's own laborers." As showing the valuo of a direct steam servico between this colony and England, wo may mention that a gentleman in town received yesterday per Southern Cross, which brought tho" Hawke's Bay portion of the English mail per s.s. lonic, a letter written in Wales, and dated April 26. Forty-nine days from the time tho letter left the writer's hands to it being delivered to the recipient is a period that rather pales tho fire of the San Francisco route. An accident happened yesterday near Maraekakaho to a man in the employment of Mr George Hastings, painter, of Hastings. It appears that the man, whose name we are unable to ascertain, was driving MiHastings' spring cart, when tho horse "lashed out" behind and broke (he unfortunate driver's leg. Dr. Faulkner was shortly afterwards in attendance, and wo bcliovo it is contemplated to_ rcmovo tho sufferer to the hospital at Napier.

A social gathering of tho members of the Spit Volunteer Fire Brigade and thoir friends was held last evening in one of Messrs Stuart and Co.'s warehouses at the Port, which was very tastefully decorated with flags, etc., for the occasion, and provod an unprecedented success. A bazaar in aid of the Free Methodist Church, AVaipawa. was opened in the Oddfellows' Hall in the township yesterday, and will remain open till this evening, when the goods remaining- unsold will bo disposed of by gift auction. There was it fair attendance of buyers. The proceedings were enlivened at intervals by selections on the pianoforte by lady visitors, and some stirring tunes by the" Waipawa brass band Stalls arc presided over by Mesdamcs Bishop, Cracknell, Sebley, and Fee, and Misses Hicks, Mildon, Britten, and Arnold.

In tho Resident Magistrate's Court las 1 afternoon a young girl named Emily Harvey was charged with obtaining money and goods under false pretences from R. 11. Robinson, viz., by means of a valueless order or cheque purporting to be signed by A. AVaddell. The prisoner was sentenced to twenty-one days' hard labor, and the R.M. commented strongly upon tho carelessness shown by the prosecutor in accepting a cheque which, on the face of it, bore distinct marks of being valueless.

One of the special jurors called in tho civil case Newton v. Burke at the Supreme Court to-day, Mr T. 11. Hanna, was also subpemed to appear as a witness in tho same sidt, aud tho question was raised by Mr Lascelles whether Mr Hanna was qualified to fill tho dual role of witness and juror at the same time. His Honor ruled in the affirmative, remarking that the witness, not being actually mixed up iv the case, could bo examined from tho jury seats. Immediately afterwards tho Registrar, who w_y_ engaged in making up the " twelve good men and true," called out the name of Thomas Konnedy Newton (tho plaintiff in tho case), his name being ono of thoso on tho special jury list. A burst of laughter, in which His Honor was compiled to join, followed, and the gravity of those present

was scarcely restored when Mr Lascellcs produced another ripple of merriment by remarking, with assumed seriousness, that he had no objection to Mr Newton acting as a juror.
