DESTRUCTIVE FIRES.

The Bridge Hotel at Waitara was burnt down between 2 and 3 o'clock this morning. Tutty, the proprietor, had recently sold his lease to Pressor, late of Hawera, and Avas to have handed over the premises today. Tutty had, however, moved out of the hotel Avith his family on Saturday, and Prosser was in the house. The only insurance is £300 in the New Zealand office on the building, which is owned by Brooking. Nothing was saved. CiißisTcnußcn, This day. About half-past 5 o'clock yesterday morning a lire broke out in tho premises of MiThomas Jacobs, linen-draper, Colombostreet, near Cathedral-squoro. It rapidly spread to Fountain Barber's bookseller's shop, on the south side, and to Stewart's fruiterer's shop on tho north, also to Glasson's small hairdresser's shop in Cathedral-square. There Avas some delay in getting the fire-engines to Avork, but as the buildings Avere of Avood and old they could scarcely be saved. The premises were under a long lease to Frederick Hobbs, the occupants being his subtenants. The upper portion of Fountain Barber's place Avas occupied by tho Young Men's Christian Association; no one lived on the premises. Hobb's insurances amounted to .£llsO in the NeAV Zealand Company, to whom the several premiums have been paid for fifteon years on some of the buildings, and for eighteen years on others. Jacobs' stock Avas insured for £1000 in the Australian Mercantile Union ; he estimates his loss at £2000. Barber is insured for £300 in the London, Liverpool, and Globe; he estimates his loss at ,£IOOO. Glasson is insured for £80 in the Australian Mercantile Union ; he estimates his loss at £100. SteAvart is uninsured ; he estimates his loss at £50.
It is stated that an attempt to burn a cottage ou Scott's road was made on Fridaynight. Mr Simmons and Avife and six children Avere in bed, Avheu Mrs Simmons heard some weather-boards crackling. The fire Avas extinguished Avith the help of some neighbors around, who saw that the weatherboards had been saturated with kerosene. The house is insured for £150 iuthe National and Union offices. Simmons' furniture is uninsured.
