WAIPAWA COUNTY PLOUGHING MATCH ASSOCIATION.
[EROM OUR AVAIPUKURAU CORRESPONDENT.] The fourth annual match in connection Avith the above Association took place at Waipukurau on Friday in the Hon. H. R. Russell's " Farm " paddock, at the rear of the Tavistock Hotel. During the day about 150 people visited the ground. The weather was very fine, but, OAving to tho heavy rain which fell on the previous day, the ground Avas not altogether suitable to contest a ploughing match on. Some fifteen ploughmen entered for the various events, tho folioAving being the result of the judges' (Messrs J. Elliot, R. AVellwood, AY. Orr, D. S. Fleming, A. 11. Russell) decisions: — Champion. — Open to all comers ; any plough ; first prize .£•"> and cup value £b ; second prize £5 ; third prize £2. AY. Pulford 1 U- Gray 2 AY. Lincoln .. .. .. 3 11. Pulford and L. BoAvdcu also competed. Class A.—Single f uitoav, for men who have not Avon a first prize : first prize £10, second prize £5 ; third prize £2 10s. AY. Young 1 J. Russell 2 S. McNutt 3 D. Hammond and J. AVhyman also competed. Olass B —Doublo and treble f uitoav ; first prizo A. and P. Society's cup value £10, and £b ; second prize £5 ; third prize £2 10s. F. MuNutt 1 J. Ramsay .. .. .. 2 Class C. — Boys under 18 ; first prizo Mr Goav's cup (or cash) value £5 ss, and £2 10s ; second prize £2 10s ; third prize £1. R. Popo .. .. .. .. 1 A. Monk '1 D. Given by proprietors AVaipaAva Mail, copy of AVaipawa Mail each issue free for one year, for best-driven team, J. Ramsay. Given by Mr AY. C. Smith, ono box tea for tho best fearing with doublo or treblefurrow plough, J. Ramsay. GiA'cn by Mr Smart, ono comb and brush for the worst-groomed team, S. McNutt, and a whip for last finish, U. Gray. Given by Mr Cosgrovc, one pair plough back bauds, for best ins and outs, AY. Young. Given by Mr Annand, one pair Avaterfcight boots for tho 4th prize in boys' class*, D. Peebles.
Givi »V r Messrs Garrett-Brothers, AVaipaAva, one pair Avatertight boots, for the first finish, J. AVhyman. At the conclusion of the match a dinner Avas held in the Toavu Hall, at which about fifty persons sat down. The spread was got up in good stylo by the local caterer, Mr Chapman, but Avhy he should put all the best Avincs on the jugdes' table, and an indifferent (incomparison) lot on the ploughman's, he can perhaps explain best himself. Mr AY. AVhito occupied the chair. The usual toasts, &c., were drunk, a number of songs sung and speeches made, the company dispersing, after an enjoyable evening, at about 9.30 p.m.
