STOCK AND SHARE MARKET. Mr AY. G. Motley reports as follows:— The activity in all descriptions of investments reported in my last has been continued throughout tho past week, and considerable parcels in Union Insurance I have experienced no difficulty in placing at 21s. South British remain steady at 5Gs. I havo disposed of Nationals at 25s Od, a price showing an apparent decline on last week's quotations, but where there is no anxiety to (put tho shares may be generally quoted in the open market at 20s. There has been a similar fluctuation iv Standards, of which I have sold a parcel at 13s 3d. On the other hand I am able to quote Colonial Bank shares at Is iv advance of what passed through my bands last week. There has been some enquiry for Kaiapoi AVoolleu, which is an investment that .is growing considerably iv favor. The success attending the woollen factories at Kaiapoi and Mosgiel has given an impetus to the industry, and at a public meeting held recently at AVellington it was resolved to establish a company there with a capital of £100,000, tho provisional directory Whig empowered to register tbe articles of association so soon as 5000 shares (.625,000) are taken up. Tho. extraordinary (hy- season experienced on the west coast of the Middle Island, has had the effect of lowering tho depth of water in the rivers, but, with the exception of tho s.s. Oinapero grounding in the Buffer, no impediment to navigation has been reported. Tho successful lloating- of that vessel has relieved any fear that might have been entertained with regard to her safety, nor has the conJidence of shareholders in Westport Coats been in tho least degree shaken in the ultimate success of the mine. A large parcel of shares in that company changed hands during the week at 24s (30s paid). The demand for South Pacific Petroleums has very greatly in-rn-eased owing to tho favorable accounts to hand from Gisborne, where "promoters " arc reported to bo held tightly at 8s Gd. 1 have, however, disposed of some at sixpence less, but there is a strong tendency to hold pending further news from tho works, the boro being now down over 210 feet. Contributors' shares iv the same company havo gone up one shilling during the week. (Southern Cross Petroleums remain at last quotations, lint Mr Stubbs' investigations show that the deposits of the paraffin "butter" aro sufficiently extensive to warrant the belief that that article will form an important addition to the products of the company's estate. A quantity of this "butter" has been collected for shipment to the Soap and Candle AVorks at Christ- ■ church. The following are the latest quotations :— Banks.—Now Zealand, £22 10-; Colonial, 47/-; National, 73:-.
