May 13. Owing to a heavy failure by a jobber on the Stock Exchange a semi-panic has been created, and Home stocks arc affected. May 19. It is believed that the Pope's' recent decisive action in reference to Irish affairs is due to tho instigation of Mr Errington, M.P., and Cardiniils Manning and M'Cabc. The clergy in Ireland tacitly acquiesce in the decision of his Holiness, but tho_ leaders iof tho Land League assume an attitude of M[ailW - May 20. It is intended to send Kavanagh, James Smith, O'lianlon, and Peter Carey, the approvers iv tho Phcuuix Park case, to Australia. The Porto has appointed a commission to ■ inaugurate reforms throughout the Empire. In consequence of evidence recently obtained in connection with tho inquiry into other crimes, the Irish police have arrested seven men on a charge of having been coiivecrned in the murder of Mrs Henry J. Smythe, who was shot dead near Barbavilla Hoitso, County Westmcath, on the 2nd of April, ISB2, while driving home from church iv a carnage in company with Mr Barlow Bmythe, her brother-in-law, and Lady Henrietta Monck. The actual murderers i wore at the time reported to be three men, ■ and they fired point blank at the carriage. It was 'believed tho death of Mr Barlow Bmythc was aimed at, Several arrests were made at the time, but no conclusive ovidcuco was obtainable. May 21. Sir W. Chambers, the publisher, of Edinburgh, who received a baronetcy only a few days back, is dead. Information is to hand from tho Cape that Cctewayo has suffered another defeat at the hands of the Zulu chief Oham. Tho capital sentence passed on Patrick Delaucy, who confessed to complicity in the Phojnix Park murders, lias been commuted to pun.il servitude for life. Jefferson Davis is seriously ill, and his condition is considered very critical. Mr Bradlaugh is organising a monster meeting to bo held iv Trafalgar-square on August Gth.
