ACCIDENTS AND CASUALTIES.
Tiiuaru, This day. A man named AVilliam Bi-.-roughs Avas found drowned iv a Avater-hole near AVashdyke yesterday. It is supposed he had missed his Avay in trying to take a short out across a paddock. AVellinoton, This day. In connection Avith the accident on board the steamer Huia, the passenger Avho reported the occurrence says he Avas on the bridge Avhen the accident took place. He Avas lying doAvn sick, and felt something knock against his legs, aud on opening his eyes lie saAv Avhat seemed to bo a bundle in the act of falling overboard. Getting up on- his legs and looking over the side he saw that it Avas a jnau, aud immediately
gave an alarm. Captain Berriman says deceased was in excellent spirits, perfectly sober, and he (the captain) had not seen him in better health. He cannot account for the affair in any Avay. It is surmised that on knocking against the sick prisoner the mate misrht have tripped, losing his balance, and fell over. No cry Avas heard. Deceased Avas about 40 years of age.
