DEPORTING MAORI PRISONERS TO THE SOUTH.
Auckland, This day. Mahuki and sixteen other Maori prisoners were sent South by the Hawou yesterday. Their destination is understood to be Lyttelton gaol, but the authorities arc reticent on the subject. A WOMAN FOUND DEAD IN BED. Auckland, This day. A woman named Mary Ann Steele Aras found dead in her bed early yesterday morning by a man she was living with. At the inquest a A'erdict Avas returned that death had resulted fromjnatural causes, accelerated by intemperance. FESTIVITIES IN HONOR OF THE GOVERNOR. Auckland, This day. The Governor, Lady Jervois, and party, a ccoinpanied by the Chairman of the Harbor Board, had a pleasure trip in the harbor yesterdoy in the steamer Tongariro. AfterAvards they visited the Premier's country residence, Lake Takapuna, North Shore. THE COSTLEY BEQUESTS. Auckland, This day. The total private bequests of Costlcyonly amouut to £3900, so that the balance of an immense estate, valued at £135,000, goes to charities. Several of the bequests are to bo called Costley bequests. The City Council have decided to ajiply to the Government for the remission of the legacy duty on the bequests. A TELEGRAPH OFFICE STRUCK BY LIGHTNING. Wellington, This day. Intelligence Avas received this afternoon from Tinui that the telegraph office in that township Avas struck by lightning about 8 o'clock on Saturday night and set fire to. The operator Avas fortunately on the premises at the time, and succeeded in extinguishing the flames before much damage was done. All the Avires in the office were broken by lightning, and no foAver than eleven poles on Black Hill were shattered by the electric discharge. SERIOUS ACCIDENT TO A WOMAN ON A RAILWAY LINE. Auckland, This da} - . When the G p.m. Onchunga train Avas between To Papa station and Onchunga last evening, in rounding a curve the coavcntcher knocked a Avoman oft the line. On the train being stopped to pick her up it was found that her skull was fractured, her right ,inn broken, and one of her feet partly exit off. Dr Scott Avas soon in attendance, but gave no hope for her. She Avas removed to her home, having been identified as Mrs Lee, Avho gave evidence in the trial of Priestly and Mrs Hamilton. It is not known lioav she came to be on the line. THE CHINESE MURDER AT ROXBURGH. — MYSTERIOUS DISAPPEARANCE OF A MINER. Dunkiiin, This day. There is little or no additional iicavs about the murder of the Chinaman. The probability seems to be that the deed was committed by some rabbiter, who may have fired into the cave as an act of Avanton mischief, or for purposes of robbery. Another story Avhich has somcAvhat the aspect of sensation comes from Roxburgh, the scene of the Chinese murder. A miner named Henry Coulter has disappeared mysteriously. He Avas last seen in the township about midnight on the lth instant, being then the Avorsc for liquor and kuOAvn to have money about him. There Avas a rumor yesterday that his body had been found in the river, but it Avas incorrect. HALF-YEARLY MEETING OF BANK OF NEW ZEALAND. Auckland, This day. The half-yearly meeting of the Bank of New Zealand Avas held to-day. The director's report showed the net profit for the half-year ended 31st March, after appropriation for known bad and doubtful debts, and in the reduction of the bank premises and furniture accounts, to be £89,525 18s Id. and the balance from last half-year £9,925 9s lid, making a total sum available for division of £99,-151 Ss Od. J. Williamson, in moving the adoption of the report, predicted that money Avould be easier .shortly, though much could not be expected in the coming six months.
