ORMONDVILLE.

fri:oM a i-ohiikspondent.] April 10, 1883. After a. soniCAvhat lengthy absence I am much struck with the vast improvement that has Avithin the last few months taken place in the district, I find that a Catholic chapel, an exceedingly neatlookingbuikling, has'been erected. The Church of England people not to be behind the times, have also a very prepossessing building in course of erection, the contractor being Mr Leghton. Tiie school grounds have beeuneatlyfenced, and I find the settlers between Kopua and Makatoku are at last to bo blessed with a. much needed road, the formation of wliicli is progressing very favorably toAvard completion. The store lately occupied by Mr A. Levy is uoav occupied hy Mr Groom, who, I believe, is doing a thriving trade. Mr J. W. Douglass,' I am glad to bear, is gazetted postmaster for the district, fiiy Mr A. Levy resigned. Having 'heard a great deal about the public hall, and of the much talked of concert that took place here lust week for the purpose of raising funds to distribute prizes amongst the children attending the district school, I requested admittance, and was much pleased to find a spacious building capable of holding about 2'>() people, Avell ventilated, and with a. good stage, the excellent scenery having been painted by Mr Rogers, the master of the school. Complaints are being , frequently made regarding the disgraceful scenes that take place in front of the hotel here. Only today I was disgusted at witnessing two drunken brawling fellows stripped, streaming in blood and filth, and making use of the foulest language. It would give great satisfaction to the inhabitants if the authorities would cause a constable to be stationed here, and a much needed lock-up erected.
