THE NEW RAILWAY COMMISSION.

AA-'ellington, This day. A Avarrant under the haudj of his Excellency the Governor, appointing Capt. Russell, Mr J. G. Wilson, M.H.R., and Mr C. E. Bell, M.1.C.E., as a Royal Commission to report on the best line of railway for the connection of Canterbury Avith the "West Coast of the South Island, is gazetted, It appoints those gentlemen te be commissioners "for the purpose of making enquiry into the probable cost and eco»o»ical or commercial value aud other

merits of the several lines specified iv the schedule to this commission, or any other lines proposed for the connection of the proA-incial district of Canterbury Avith the West Coast of the Middle Island ,* and also for the purpose of making* enquiry into the the mineral and other resources of the districts or lands Avhich the several lines would traverse, it being tho intention that the commissioners shall make enquiry iv the most ample manner into all the facts and circumstances necessary and proper to be considered in determination of the best line to connect Canterbury with the West Coast." The lines specified in the schedule comprise no feAver than fourteen alternative schemes which Inn-c been proposed at A-arious times for this scheme.
