Complaints reach us from rjsidents on the hi 1 Is that it is becoming a common practice for paddock g„tes to be opened on Saturday nights, by which horses stray J-ito tho public roads and then get driven into tho pound. AA r e have heard of one we'lauthenticated case that occurred last Saturday. Three horses were put into a paddock and the gate clcsed. On Sunday morning the horses were missing, and were for-id in tho pound. Horses have of course _ been known to get out of paddocks by accident, but the practice of wilfu'y opening gates at night is becoming so common that we should ad\ise a trap to be laid for the discovery of the miscreant. In another column will be found a correspondent's letter signed "Traveller," in which attention is directed to the trouble and annoyance that are caused consequent on the nnoertainty that prevails as to th« t:"ne the Union Company's steamers are idespatched from this port. AYe can quite endorse "Traveller's" remarks on the subject. It must be exceedingly annoying as well as expensive to intending passengers who come from country districts to have to wait about town from Saturday to Monday evening for the purpose of catching a steamer, which, according to the company's timor table, should have been despatched on Saturday.

It is necessary we (AVanganui Herald) should wai.i the pub'-'c against spv.ious coin in the shape of half-crowns wh : ch have got into circulation. AYe have seen one of these, and it is qv'to impos.iblo to distinguish it by the eye from tho genu-' le con —the m-'lling on the edge being pcuect, and in every oilier respect equal in aitisti:: finish. 'The old well-1 lown test of rapping it on the counter discovers the fraud at once, so that if a coni looks particularly new, it would be Ay to take precautious. Theteim drunkenness, says thoAshburton Guardian, is of course a relative one, but it must be confessed that they a' c rather liberal :'i the": "views on this matter up Methven way. At an :-iquc?t thc.e the other day, Sergeant Fclion was an: : oi sto leai'n from one of the witnesses whether the nui_ who had b'en was drr-nk at the time of the accident. Methven apparently offers a fine field for an enthusiastic temperance reformer.
Arevereud gentleman, now in the colonies, lately gave mc ("_Egles" iv the Australasian) an experience of l-s own when ' lcumbent of a London parish chi- -eh. His churclvwnirdens were a pious lawyer and a rich flow merchant. They took £180 of the incumbent's pew rents to beautify the church, and, in spit? of reinonslrance aud tho parson's threat of ecclesiastical displeasure, they stuck +o the money. The latter bethought 1 "inse 1 * of the aid of a neighboring rector of high chavactrr, remarkable for I's pevoiiasivc power. A conference was arranged, aud the friendhparson was put 'v the cha'v, upon which followed ha 1 ' an hoi r- of con esy, logic, usage, and ecelrsiasj'c law. But notl 'lg could shake the florv-deider and the law/er, who resolutely dec-ned tj pa: o w"th those pew-rents. An experiment is now being tried by the Education deparlnvent in Ireland which deserves the attention of English school boa: Is. A grant is made to a school near Cork for training sons and daughters of farmers to the practical business of their calling. The young men have lessons in almost every branch of agricultural knowledge; the young women get lessons in da'ry management, also in plain cookery and the economical management of food.
An extremely instructive thing has isays Vanity Fa-:) become pretty generally known. A clerk in a Government office wrote an anonymous letter to the Standard, making certain complaints. A high official from the office caTod on the editor of the Standard, and gently required to know the writer of the fetter. The editor sent down for two fu l !- --grown compositors, and the high official was conveyed from the premises in a most in-dign-'fied manner. This is the most useful political prececdnig for wlrch wo have lately had to thank the Standard.
A telegram to the Da :i y News of Feb.ua\y 21 is horribly suggestive. It runs as follows :—" Minute investigation has shown that it is not necessary "to blow up the wreck of tho Cimbria. The report of the diver states that tie removal of the masts will socuvo .sufficient depth for the passage, the deck being GO feet below the level of the sea. Moreover, the v\ _eok contains such an cro'mous number of dead bodies that it is considered best to leave them undisturbed. A significant result of the temperance agitation iv London is the reduction on a 1! sides of the value of public-house property. City- tavcias and suburban host : lries are falling in price as rapiPy as they rose 10 years ago, and the auctioneers who make a specialty- of tho sale of that class of proper tv are troubled not a. little to find customers for the : ■ goods. Recently a publichouse : -i a street eft' the Strand changed owners for two-thirds of the pi ice it fetched not long since, while the highest bid for a long established restaurant in Fleet street did not amount to ha I : tho sum fixed as the reserve.
