STRANDING OF THE SCHOONER JOHANN ADOLPH.
As the three-masted schooner Johann Adolph, which completed taking in her cargo of wool, talkw, and preserved meats yesterday on behalf of the NeAV Zealand Shipping Company, was being taken out iuto the'roadstcad thismoming, preparatory to sailing for London, she took the ground on the boulder bank inside the eastern pierhead, and became stranded. The pilot boarded her at the breastwork at about .3.30 this morning, and she started out on the last of the flood tide under tow of the s.s. Sir Donald, but before she could be headed out fairly into the tideway she bilged slightly on the bank just outside the cattle AA-harf. This, however, only necessitated ii slight delay, during which time the tide had unfortunately commenced to ebb, and carried the Sir Donald out ahead of her, so that, AA-hen clear of the bank, she •was unable to get her enough out into the stream, and the schooner kept in the shallow A\-ater along the pier, eventually, taking the ground on the inside tail end of tho boulder bank on the lee side of the eastern pier head almost opposite the lighthouse, Avhere the ebb tide making held her fast. As there was a considerable range on the bar this morning, which caused the schooner to surge about a good deal, lines Avere runouttothebreastAvork to steady her as much as possible. The s.s. Sir Donald Avent to her assistance again at about noon, when the tide commenced to make, and at 12.15 got her clear, and toAved her into tho roadstead.
Up to the time our reporter left the Spit the extent of her damage had not been ascertained, but, although she was making little or no Avater, it is feared that her copper and planking would be considerably injured, as the bank on which she stranded is composed of large boulders aud shingle, some of the former being very ragged and sharp. It is, however, thought probable that she Avill have to go to cither AVellington or Lyttelton for an overhaul.
