SIMONSEN OPERA COMPANY.

The Simonseu Opera Company, whose visits to Napier are always looked forward to with pleasure from the agreeable recollections that remain of them after each. recurring , departure, will again be witli on Saturday morning, and will appear that

siinie evening at the Theatre. The company have been performing during the week at Gisborne to densely crowded houses, where

they have fully maintained their reputation. They opened there, as they will open here, with Giroflo-Girorla, and this is what a Southern contemporary says of the performance. Miss Martina Siinonsen appeared

to great advantage in the title ro/cn, and she both sang and acted as an experienced artist. To Miss Martina's efforts is the ■success of the performance mainly due. The

btvlo in which she rendered the well-known

aria, ".See how it sparkles, ,, evoked the enthusiasm, and it had to be repeated, the quintett' , in praise of wine also being harmoniously sung. Mourzouk, the fierce chief of the Moors, was admirably pourtrayed by Signor Lissanfc, whose excellent make-up, brilliant vocalisation, and appropriate acting left nothing- to be desired. The ovation accorded for the chorus commencing, "How like she is to Girofhi," was in" no small measure due to Signor Lis.sant's purity of vocalisation. Mr E. Fitzgerald, though possessing a very light tenor, gave an excellent representation of Marasipiin, who is betrothed to Girofle, the twin sister of Girofia. hi the love duet with Miss Martina Siinonsen as Girofle Mr Fitzgerald's voice blended sweetly with hers, and it formed one of the most pleasing numbers in the opera. As. Don 15i>lero D'Alearazas and Auroro, Mr 'Wentworth

and Miss Alice Stanley acted well, evoking

roars of laughter. Miss Francis Saville's Pedro was a good personation, and Miss Minnie Hope appeared as The cousins of GiroHa were represented by Misses Yere, Chapman, and Hartroyd. The scenery and appointments were excellent.
