WELLINGTON.
This day
The Victorian Government recently invited New Zealand to join in a conference to consider the advisibility of joining the postal union. The New Zealand Government have replied regretting its ability to take part in the conference, as it is impossible- that a Minister could be spared to visit Australia so shortly before the meeting of Parliament. With regard to the renewal of the 'Frisco mail contract, it is understood that Mr Stuart, the Premier of New South Wales, will shortly inform Parliament there of the views of his Government on the subject, and the New Zealand Government await the result.
The Governor will leave on a visit to the North Island at an early date next month. The Premier will leave for Auckland before the Governor, and will be the Minister in attendance during Sir W. Jervois's stay. The Government have received information that the day of the old monthly meetings has passed off with perfect quietness at Parihaka. No attempt was made to hold a meeting, and it is now definitely known that To Whiti did send round specially to different parts of the country expressly forbidding the natives to assemble.
