Intelligence is to hand from Paris that Byrne, who was rccentPy arrested there on the charge of complicity in tho Irish assassinations, has now been released from custody. Mr Gladstone has resumed the leadership of his party in the House of Commons, where he was received _.with much enthusiasm. It has transpired that, Mr Gladstone having refused to facilitate its discussion, Sir Stafford Northeote has abandoned his motion demanding the appointment of a committee to enquire into the circumstances connected with the alleged Kilmaiuham treaty. Mr Parnell has announced his intention of visiting America between Easter and Whitsuntide. The homeward mails via San Francisco (Auckland, January 30) were delivered in London to-day. At to-day's wool sale 12,300 bales were catalogued, and a firm and active demand was experienced. March 10. Mr Biggar, M.P. for C'avan, Ireland, has been mulcted in £300 damages for breach of promise of marriage. An arrest has been made in connection with the letter containing explosive material addressed to the Viceroy of Ireland, which was recently detected in the post at Bally - dehob, County Cork, Ireland. Intelligence is to hand that the passenger steamer Copenhagen, bound from Leith to America, has foundered at sea. So far as is at present known sixty-five passengers, mostly imigrants, have been drowned. Evidence having been given by Kavanagh and Molloy, the informnrs, that the knives used in the Phoenix Park assassination were thrown into the Dublin Canal, search was made and the weapons were discovered today. Mr Smith (Liberal) has been elected to the House of Commons by a large majority for High Wycombe, vice the Hon. W. li. P. Carrington (Liberal), resigned. In reply to a question put to him in the House of Commons to-day, Mr Gladstone stated that the intelligence of the atrocities recently committed by the Boers upon the Transvaal natives was seriously occupying the attention of tho Government. A firm and active demand again prevailed at the wool auction to-day. The catalogue comprised 12, GOO bales. March 11. It is understood that the American and Euglish Governments have agreed to renounce the warrant issued for the arrest of Sheridan, the supposed negotiator of the alleged Kilmaiuham treaty. In the search for the Phoenix Park knives in the Dublin Canal yesterday the police found other knives which are proved to have been used in several other murders which have been committed. March 12. It has transpired that the Cabinet has resolved upon certain measures to be taken to protect the Transvaal natives from the Boers' oppression. The nature of the dteps proposed have uot, however, been made known. The conference which has been sitting here upon the question of the prolongation of the powers of the Commission for the Navigation of the Danube has now closed its sittings. It is understood that all the Powers represented by their ambassadors at the conference arc satisfied with the decision arrived at. It is officially announced that Sir Anthony Musgrave, Governor of Jamaica, has accepted tho Governorship of Queensland. March 13. It has transpired that Her Majesty's ship Dayad, on the East Indian station, has been ordered to Tamatave, to watch British interests in Madagascar iv the present crisis. A reduction of the British army of occupation in Egypt by 0000 men is being ordered by the British Government. It is announced that Earl Spencer, Viceroy of Ireland and Lord President of,tho
Council, has resigned the latter position. The Easter recess of the British Parlia ment will begin on the 20th and close oi the 29th instant.

The cargo of frozen mutton ex steamship Europa from Melbourne has realised an average of 8d per lb.
In the House of Lords to-day Earl Derby, Secretaiy of State for the Colonies, announced that the Government had decided only to remonstrate with the Boers as to their oppression of the natives. The cost of a small expedition to the Transvaal would exceed the value of the land in dispute. The natives, his Lordship added, would be protected, but only in the last extremity would force be justified.
It is announced that Earl Spencer, although resigning the Presidency of the Council, will remain in the Cabinet. A new President will be appointed whoso duties will be virtually those of Minister of Agriculture.
The University boat race to-day results in a victory for Oxford by three lengths.
In the House of Commons to-day Mr Parnell introduced a -motion setting forth that a further amendment of the Irish Land Act is necesary. Mr Gladstone stated that he resolutely refused to agree to further legislation in the direction stated, aud.after some debate the motion was rejected by 250 to G3 votes.

In tho House of Commons to-day the Hon. Evelyn Ashly, Under-Secretary for the Colonies, stated that the Anglophile chief of the Transvaal border will be pensioned and located in British torritorv.
The election to fill tho vacancy in the representation of Mid-Cheshire in the House of Commons has resulted in the return of the Hon. Mr Egcrton, by a largo majority over Mr Latham, the Liberal candidate.
The Spanish Government has refused to release the Cuban refugees who were handed over to the Spanish authorities by a mistake on the part of the British magistrate at Gibraltar last year.

An explosion of dynamite occurred last evening at the offices of the Local Government Board in Whitehall. The offices Avere completely wrecked. Immense damage Avas caused to the building and thousands of Avindows in the A-icinity Avere shattered. Fortunately no one has been injured.
