TRANSPORTING FRENCH CONVICTS TO THE PACIFIC.
LONDON.
Marchl. The French Government propose to transport habitual criminals to New Caledonia, New Hebrides, and the Society Islands. The English Government is favorable to a modified system of compulsory education for Ireland. March 5. Mr Edmonds has been elected President of the American Senate. Great discontent prevails among the English in India at the Government Bill subjecting them to Native Criminal Courts. The Colonial Institute has urged upon the Right Hon. Anthony Mundella to direct the teaching in Board Schools of geography, history and the knowledge of the resources of the colonies. The Institute has intimated its intention of offering to schools under the control of the Board prizes for the best essays on colonial subjects. 2>lr 3lundell» expressed his Tvillingness to consider any new code that the \ Institute provides.
