SEVERE GALES IN ENGLAND.— MUCH DAMAGE ON LAND. AND SEA. THE GOATERNORSHIP OF CEYLON. FORBIDDING USE OF PIGEONS AT SHOOTING MATCHES. THE SORRENTO'S CARGO OF FROZEN MEAT. AVAR BETWEEN FRANCE AND MADAGASCAR. MEMBERS OF THE SALVATIONARMY SENT TO GAOL IN INDIA. LONDON. March 5. A good demand Avas again experienced at to-day's wool auction. Tho catalogue comprised, 13,000 bales.
March 6. Tenders for the balance (£3,400,000) of the Victorian four-million loan were opened today. The total amount offered was found to be £8,990,000. Tenders at £100 tAvo shillings will receive twenty per cent, and tenders above that amount will receive allotment in full. A soA-ere gale, accompanied by a heaA-y fall of snow, has been experienced over the greater part of England. Much damage has been caused on the land by the wind and snoAvdrifts, and many _sasters at sea arc reported owing to thtf severity of the gale which raged along the coasts. It is reported that Sir John Henry Lcfroy will assume the Governorship of Ceylon for a year, pending the arrival of Sir Arthur Gordon. Intelligence is to hand from Paris that there is every reason to believe that Byrne, avlio Avas recently arrested under an extradition Avarrant, charged with complicity in Irish conspiracies, Avill be at once released by the French authorities. At to-day's avool sale 12,500 bales were offered. Less demand avus experienced, and prices were occasionally easier, excepting for Port Phillip and Sydney good greasy and good combing avools, aud generally for these descriptions prices are firm. March 7. _ In the House of Commons to-day a bill forbidding the use of pigeons at shooting matches avbs read a second time. At the avool sale to-day 11,900 bales were catalogued. There av;is a good demand for fine wools, but inferior aud medium qualities Averc neglected. The homeward mails A-ia Naples, Avhieh left Melbourne per John Elder on January 24, Avere delivered here to-day. March S. _ The cargo of frozen mutton ex steamship Sorrento from Port Chalmers has now all been disposed of at an average of OJd per pound.
