A LIBEL ACTION.— VERDICT FOR DEFENDANT. STRANDING OF THE BARQUE NOLEN. PROMISING SUCCESS OF REMAINDER OF VICTORIAN LOAN. MELBOURNE. Monday. Au action for libel between MrDe Mestre, tlio well-known owner of race horses, and Mr David Synic, proprietor of the Melbourne Age and Leader, on account of an article which appeared in the latter paper commenting upon the running of plaintiff's horses, was concluded to-day, a verdict being , returned for the defendant. News has been received hero that the barque Nolen, f>29 tons, bound from Melbourne to Lyttelton, iv ballast, went ashore at the north end of Flinders Island in Bass's Straits on Wednesday last in a heavy gale, and now lies embedded in the sand. All lives were saved.
A private telegram has been received here stating that money is abundant in the London market, and that the success of the remainder of the Victorian four million loan is considered assured.
