FLOATING OF THE STEAMER AUSTRAL
MELBOURNE. Tuesday. The Hon. Peter Lalor has been re-elected Speaker of the Legislative Assembly without opposition. His election was proposed by Mr James Service, and seconded by Mr Graham Berry. Signs of a Liberal-Con-servative coa' : tion are hourly increasing. The trial of the station master Thompson and the guard Hunt for manslaughter in connection with the Hawthorne railway accident in December last was concluded to-day, when the jury returned a verdict of not guilty in each case. Difficulties have occurred in ai ranging for the proposed intercolonial match between the EngMsh eleven and the combined Australian team, several prominent Victorian representatives who were expected to play being unwilling or unable to do so, and it is possible that the proposed contest w.'U be abandoned.
