The Hon. Mr Dick, the Colonial Secretary, left on a visit South yesterday, and he will be absent a fortnight. Auckland, This day. The Hon. Mr Bryce, Native Minister, and the Hon. Mr Rolleston, Minister of Lands, left in the steamer Stella last night for Tauranga, en route for Rotorua.
THE RECENT HEAVY RAINS-LOSS OF LIFE AND DAMAGE TO PROPERTY. Auckland, This day. The heavy rains south of Auckland have done much damage. At Waiuku several bridges have been carried away, and at Pukehoe two chains of the VTaikato railway lino is Avrecked. Joseph Mills, son of Joseph Mills. _ a platelayer, aged 14, was drowned Avhile crossing the "Waipapa creek during the heavy rains. The father nearly lost his life in attempting to save his son. Thames, This day. The Rev. Father Boyle narrowly escaped drowning on Saturday. He was going on duty to' Owharoa, and in crossing the Wa'itoto river his horse was swept away, and he had to swim across, and regain the horse on the other side. On returning on Sunday Father Boyle lost his horse, two coats,"and nearly £"30. He had a narrow escape of his life. He walked to Paearoa in his shirt sleeves, and at a hut betiveen Waihi and Owharoa was refused food and shelter because he was a Catholic priest.
