A NEW OFFICE CREATED.
[To the Editor of the Daily Telegraph.] Sir, —I observe a local in the morning paper to the effect that Mr Lewis has been appointed resident agent of the Government Life Assurance Department. The local states (what everybody knows) that Mr Grabb has hitherto efficiently conducted the business and increased it. I have not heard, nor do I believe has anyboby else, that the work was too much for Mr Grubb, and I would ask '' AVhy is a separate officer appointed at a cost of at least double that formerly paid." The great boast of the Government in endeavoring to extend the business has always been its economy in management, owing to the fact that the Post Office did a great part of the work. If the appointment of salaried resident agents throughout the colony is to be a feature of the new management the expanses will he more than doubled; and, let it be remarked, the travelling agents (or toutprs) will still have to be supported, for it seems that Mr Lewis will not canvass for " lives," but will leave that to the travelling 'agents. "Where, then, will be the pronrised bonus, which has been the bait held out to insurers? The Government Insurance Department is playing into tho hands of rival concerns. I am not interested only in the Government Assurance but in others, and that of the Government, being intended as a national business, should not sacrifice efficiency to economy, neither should it, on the other hand, waste its money without improving its business. Again, I say, Policy-holders,, look out for your rights!—l am, _~ A Policy Holder, IMC7. Napier, February 27th, 1883.
