! A SQUABBLE BETWEEN TWO POLI-TICIANS-TWO MEMBERS RESIGN THEIR SEATS TO CONTEST THE SAME ELECTORATE. MELBOURNE. Thursday. The polling for the general elections took place and up" to the present time (10 p.m.) the returns show the following number of candidates to have been returned:— Constitutionalists, 19; Ministerialists, 1 ; Independents, i ; Liberals, 2") ("r23;. The elections have genera lly passed off quietly, but there is considerable excitement in the city to-night, and the streets are thronged. Sir Bryan o'Lough - leu was present when the result of the polling was announced, and his name was at the bottom of the poll. The returns are as yet incomplete . The following are the results already to hand : —Ararat, elected, W. M'Clellan, by a small majority; defeated, D. Gaunson. Ballarat East, elected. J. James and J. Russell, Tooth by a small majority: Ballarat West, elected, 11. Bell and Major Smith, by large majorities ; Finchen' and Jones are ties for the third seat. Barwon, elected, J. F. Levien by a small majority. Belfast, elected, J. J. Madden by a large majority ; defeated, Sir J. O'Shannassfty by a large majority. BoiTondara, elected, W. F. Walker by a small majority. Bourke Borough, elected, C. H. Pearson by small majority. Bonrke South, elected, J. Keys by smaU majority. Bourke West, elected, A. Daken by'lnnro majority, and S. T. Staughton by small " majority : defeated, Sir Bryan O'Loghlan' by'small majority. Carltou, elected, J. Gardner by an overwhelming majority. Castlemain, elected, J. B. Patterson and J. Service by large majorities. Collingwood, elected, G. D. Langrklgo and J. Minims by large majorities. Dalhousie, elected. J. G. Duffy 'by small majority. Emerald Hill, elected, J. Nimmo by an overwhelming majority, and R. Maegregor by a laro-e majority. Fitzroy, elected, R. D". Reid and' A/L. Tucker by small majorities. Footscray, elected, W. M. Clark by an overwhelming majority. Geelong, elected, G. Cunningham by a large majority, J. H. Connor by a small majority, and G-. Berry by a narrow majority. Melbourne East, elected, G. Coppin and E. L. Fox by lnrge majorities. Melbourne North, ele -ted, J. Lauren* and M. Ross by overwhelming majorities. Melbourne West, elected, j. Orkney and Sir C. Macmalion by large majorities. Ovens, elected, G. Billsun and G. B. Rcrford by sman majorities. Polwarth. elected, W. Robertson by mi overwhelming majority. Richmond", elected, J. Bosuto and C. Smith by large majorities; defeated, L. L. Smith. Ripon, elected, W. 11. Wren by an overwhelming majority ; defeated, F. Longmorc by a large majority. Rodney, elected, D. Gillies by large majority, and J. Shackelsmell by a small majority. Sandhurst, elected, R. Burrows, R." Clark, and J. Quick, by large majorities. St. Kilda, elected. J. Harris and M. 11. Davies by large majortiies; defeated, G. D. Carter by a large majority. Warrnambool, elected, J. G. Francis by a largo majority. Williamstuwn, elected, A, T. Clark by a large majority. * This day. Returns arc now to hand regarding the election of members to 81 scats in the Assembly. Some, however, are as yet incomplete. Tho Argus, in its issue this morning, gives the following classification of the elected members :—Ministerialists 7, Constitutionalists 37, Liberals 32, and Independents 8. The Age classifies them as follows : — Constitutionalists 33, Liberals o.j, and Ministerialists 10. The general results, however, indicate the balauce of power to be between the Constitutional and the Liberal parties, and confirms the probability of the formation of a coalition Ministry. Tho following additional election returns are to hand :— Avoca, elected, T. Langdon and J. M. Grant, by large majorities. Creswick, elected, R. Richardson, J. H. Wheeler, and T. Cooper, by small majorities. Delatite, elected, J. H. Graves, Grant A., C. Mac Donald, and J. Rees, by large majorities. Grenville, elected, A. Young by a large majority and D. M. Davies by a small majority. Mandurang, elected, T. Mooro by a largo majority, J. Fisher by a small majority, and tho third member is uncertain. Maryborough, elected, B. J. Fink by a large majority, and R. Bowman by a smallma jority. Moira, elected, G. W. Ball, and H. Bolton by a small nrijority. Normanby, elected, W. Shields by a large majority. Rtawcll, elected, J. Woods by a small majority. Wimmeru, elected, W. Madden, and R. Baker by small majorities.
