FIRE ON BOARD THE SHIP RANGITIKEI.
A NARROW ESCAPE

By the last mail the New Zealand Shipping Company received the folloAving information regarding the fire on board the ship Rangitikei:—About Bp.m. (date not stated) when the vessel Avas in latitude 17 deg. 15 mins. south, and longitude 30 deg. 1 rain, west, a fire Avas discovered in the starboard Aving of the 'tween decks, a little abaft the mainmast. The hatches Avero at ouco closed, aud holes were cut in
the upper deck through which the hose were brought to play on the flames. After about half-an-hour's pumping the flames were extinguished, and a hole was made in the deck large enough for a man to go down and iiscertain tho extent of the damage. The burnt wool was then brought up in iron buckets and thrown overboard. The total quantity lost was eight bales. It was found that the fire had begun near the top of the cargo iv a quantity _of cotton clippings shipped by the Kaiapoi Woollen Company. The damage done to the other portions*of the cargo was trifling.
