DEATH OF THE CATHOLIC BISHOP OF BALLARAT.
ARREST OF A NEW ZEALAND ABSCONDER.
STRIKE OF COAL LABORERS AND DRIVERS.
MELBOURNE. February 1.5. The death is announced of the Right Rev. M. O'Connor, D.D., Roman Catholic Bishop of Ballarat. This day. The police last night effected the arrest of George Clark, of Clyde. Otago, on a charge of embezzling :i sum of .£-180. The accused was clerk of the Vincent County Council. lie his now detained in custody pendiug the arrival of a warrant from New Zealand. The labourers and driver* \.\ the coal trade struck on Monday, and it is now feared that the strike will extend to the lumper* and others. They demand that the eight hours system shall be adopted. The masters refuse to agree to the demand of the men, and threaten to lay up the vessels engaged in the coal trade.
