AUCKLAND.
This day. Mr George Rhodes, a builder, was drowned while bathing at Ponsonby this inoi'iiing. The Hon. Mr Rolleston arrived in Auckland on Tuesday night. The Hon. Mr Brycc remains in Alexandra, where he was met by Mr Wilkinson, the Government Native Agent. Mr Brycc intends to proceed overland from Raglan to Aotea, to lay off the road and establish a ferry across Aotea harbor, near the mission station, to establish direct communication with the now township of Kawhia. The Hon. Mr Rolleston -will proceed to the northern settlements. A woman named Mary Ann Long, who had been taken up for drunkenness, committed .suicide in a police cell last night in a determined manner. On the police sergeant and West, the housekeeper, visiting the cell at 9 o'clock they found her hanging by the neck from the bar of the cell door by a bit of gauze netting which she had worn round her neck. The Manukiiu iron works have been successfully started, and wrought iron blooms are being made there from Manukau iron sand.
