TESTS OF RAILWAY BRAKES. GUBERNATORIAL CHANGES. MELBOURNE. February 1. The Rst of claimants for compensation for damages for the Hawthorn railway accident continues daily to increase, the total amount claimed now exceeding £100,000. The tests of Woods' and Westing-house's railway brakes was brought to a conclusion yesterday by a trial of stoppages down a steep incline. The Westing-house train attained a speed of 72 miles an hour, and was stopped in 33] seconds after running 190 l feet. This result is greatly superior to Woods'. The award of the board has not yet been published. Sir Thomas Mcllwruith is now in Melbourne visiting the principal manufacturing and other firms. Ernest Gillies, the explorer, arrived in Melbourne 3'esterduy from his recent exploring expedition. A telegram from Perth states that information has been received there that Sir John Pope Hennessey, the new Governor of Mauritius, will not arrive there for some months, and that consequently 3lr Napier Broome's arrival in West Australia will be deferred.
