EDUCATION IN NEW SOUTH WALES.

Commenting ou the withdniAval of the State subvention to the denominational schools of Ncav South AVales, the Syducy Evening Ncaa-s, in its issue of the Ist instant says :—State aid to denominational schools has uoav ceased iv Ncav South AY ales, never in all human j.robability to be resumed. From and after to-day the religious denominations choosing to maintain their schools, .vliich have hitherto received grants of money from (he Government, must do so at their oavii charges and expense. Those A.-ho are unable or unAvilling to do so Avill have either to negotiate AA-ith the Education Department for the occupation of thenschool buildings, should they be needed for the public, or find some other mode of utilising the premises. The Roman Catholics have fully determined upon their course. They ..-ill neither give nor take quarter. Thpy have been busy for the past year m preparing iicav schools of their own, and in constituting councils to organise and regulate their system of education ; and their plans arc avc-11 matured, so that the absence of the Archbishop (that determined foe to to secularism in c-a-cry form), avlio leaves for Rome in April, -will not retard the development of the scheme. So far as the j.ublic are concerned, ho.vever, the Roman Catholic, schools Avill henceforward take rank entirely amomv the j.rivateseminaries of the colony, and their value will, like other institutions, be tested by results. Tho Church of England authorities seem, with fcAv exceptions, to have accepted the inevitable-, and resigned the teaching of their children to the care of the State. The other religious bodies, if aa-c excejit the Jcavs, are already heart and soul Avith the public schools arrangements.
