AVellington, Tlus day. Before the rhilosohical Society Dr Ncavman has read a paper on the question—ls the climate of New Zealand healthy. It contained statistics prepared by himself and Air Fraukland, of the Insurance Department, from 1874 to the present time, showing the ages of the people of tho colony in the quinquennial periods so as to compare Avith Great Britiau. It shoAved the death rate here to be 11-5 per 1000, while that of Great Britain is 23, or double. Several other reasons than a healthy climate, AA'hich Avas admitted, .vere, hoAvcvcr, indicated to partially account for this. The death rate here Avas, hoAvever, loavci- than in any other civilized country. AVith tho increase of nianufacturies and the introduction of diseases at present unkiiOAAii it Avas, lioav - ever, likely to increase. A line .specimen of cork taken from a tree fifteen years old, grown by Air Alason at the Hutt, was sihoAA-n by Dr Hector, aa-lio also denied that he desired in any Avay to dispute the Rev. Air Green's statement about the ascent of Alount Cook.
