WATERING THE STREETS.

[To the Editor of the. Daily Telegraph.] Sir, —I have been asked by one of the numerous officers of the Corporation if I Avas " desirous that the present method of Avatcring the streets should be continued, and, if so, Avould I contribute to the cost of such Avork!-" My ansAver Avas " no," and I find that this is tbe ansAver given by nearly all avlio have been applied to. This method of endeavoring to reduce the expenditure of the borough funds is, to say the least of it, an insane one. I Avould ask Avhy thotradespcopleofthcpartieularlocalityselected are the only persons asked tbe question 'f Are they the only persons avlio arc benefited. Pedestrians, cab OAvners whose cabs are longeron the Hastings : strcct stands than anywhere else, commission agents, in fact business people of all kinds who are constantly moA-ing along the greatest thoroughfare, all benefit by this very small expenditure of borough funds, and it Avill not, I maintain, reflect much credit on the Council should it decide to discontinue the Avatering of the greatest thoroughfare of the toAvn, an act that aat.ll be at onceexposingourpoA-erty to visitors as well as to our country neighbors. Hoping the several members of the Council Avill consider this matter before deciding to abandon the watering of the streets. —lam, kc, One Concerned. Napier, January 24, 1883.
