A FORGER COMMITTED FOR TRIAL.
Patea, This day. William Dale, recently manager of the Patea Permanent Building Society was charged at the R.M. Court yesterday at the instance of the directors with forgery. The actual offence was altering a bank passbook to make it appear that £271 15s had been paid in, whereas the correct amount was £11 15s. Ho was committed for trial at the next sittings of the Supreme Court at New Plymouth, bail being allowed, himself iv £500, and two sureties of £250 each. CANDIDATES FOR SIR JOHN HALL'S SEAT IN THE HOUSE. Christchurch, This day. Numerous rumors arc afloat regarding tho Selwyn scat in the House of Representatives. The first is that Sir John Hall has been requested to obtain leave of absence instead of vacating his scat, but lias declined; that further measures are being adopted to induce him to change his mind, and that, should he not do so, prominent Government men will support Mr E. J. Lee, on whose behalf canvassing is now going on. The second is that Mr E. Wakefield, of Timaru, was asked to come forward as a Government candidate, but declined. The third rumor is to the the effect that the Hon. E. Richardson has been asked to offer himself as an Opposition candidate, and will probably consent. NOTABILIA. The ratepayers of the Puketapu aud Clive Road Board districts meet this evening, the former at the school-room, Puketapu, at 0.30, and the latter at the public hall, Clive, at 7, to consider the question of abolishing Road Boards and allowing County Councils to do their work. At tho Horse Bazaar to-morrow Mr Monteith will sell the racehorse Aramoho and 1G other horses. Legal proceedings will be taken against any personr slaughtering without a license in the Hawke's Bay County after Tuesday next. Tenders are invited for alterations to Messrs Fortune and Black's premises in Dickens street. Messrs McEwan and Murray, Hastings, offer a reward of £2 for the recovery of two mares, lost from Napier ou the Ist instant. Mr F. P. Corkill, New Plymouth, is now booking orders for the present crop of Taranaki cocksfoot. Mr Cassin, Hastings street, is clearing his stock of glassware, ire, at reduced prices, and dairies of fresh butter is always on hand at his establishment. Mr M. R, Miller will sell at the Agricultural and Pastoral Society's annual ram fair, to be held at Hastings on Wednesday, 24th instant, a number of Lincoln, RomneyMarsh, and Merino rams from the most eminent breeders, and some pure Wyudham stud ewes. Mr F. Sutton invites tenders for clearing land near Korokipo, or for ploughing and clearing in one contract. Special purchases of new goods have been made by Mr Alexander Browne, Hastings street, who is offering the cheapest drapery iv Napier. For particulars see our " Wanted Known" column.
