THE DUNEDIN MUNICIPAL FRAUDS.

Dunedin, This day. At the Police Court to-day Mr aud Mrs Massey were charged with stealing certain waterworks debentures, the property of tho Dunedin Corporation, and with disposing of same knowing them to be stolen. Mr Stout appeared to prosecute, and Mr Fitchett to defend. Mr Stout opened the case at great length. He said that a number of wateworks bonds were prepared in duplicate for exchange, and handed to Mr Massey, the Town Clerk, who retained them. After Massey left the Corporation employ the book referring to the waterworks debentures could not be found, and when he was written to he replied that he had kept no books. After his arrest this book was found at his house. The duplicate bonds were sold by Mrs Massey in Melbourne, and to show that her husband was aware of her action, counsel read a memorandum of the sale results taken from Massey's pocket-book found on him when arrested. The case for the prosecution was this : Massey obtained the bonds ready for exchange ; that he left the Town Clerk's office without delivering them ii]) to Mr Gibson : that these bonds, which were intended for exchange, were afterwards sold in Melbourne by Mrs Muwsey with his knowledge, and that he reaped the reward of her sales. The case is exciting great interest here.
