WAIROA.

[from our own correspondent.] ' ** January 1, ISB_. There is some trouble between the A r estry of St. Paul's and the Rev. S. Williams re the purchase of " The Parsonage," and the latter, considering that the A r estry does not duly appreciate his offer, has withdrawn it. It was understood here that the Vestry did appreciate Mr S. AVilliaius' very liberal offer, and it is hoped he Mill reconsider his intention. The Frasertown sports, and Catholic soiree at To Kapu on the 2nd January were very well attended, a large number of people from AVairoa going up hi the s.s. Echo, aud in traps and on horse back. The different events were very well contested. The soiree was a decided success, both artistically and pecuniarily considered. Some people are very innocent! At the Council meeting on AVednesday Mr George Duncan wrote applying 1 to the Council for compensation for being prevented in carrying out a contract for fixing up the Mohaka punt. He forwarded also Mr Lascelles' opinion on his (Mr Duncan's) opinion, to the effect that Mr Duncan had a claim ou . the Council for compensation, as the Council gave him a contract, to cany out which he would have to commit a trespass. Very good Mr Lascelles, but you should first have found out that the Comicil had got judgment recently against the natives for obstructing the place in question, and Mr . H. Baker proved to Captain Preece's satis- y „ faction that the road was a public road.
