This day. The proprietors of the Roslyn woollen mills, Messrs Ross and Glendinning, are thoroughly satisfied with the electric light Avhich they have been using for some months. Work in the mill goes on continually all night long, so that the light has been thoroughly tested. The cost is much less than gas, "but the steam motiA-e poAver used for the spinning machines is also used to generate the electricity. The public school retm-ns show a substantial increase in the average attendance this quarter exceeding any preA-ious quarter. For the last two years the attendance has been falling off. The trade hitherto earned on by Messrs J. M'EAvan and Co. betAveen Melbom-ne and Fiji will for the futiu-e be performed by the Union Steamsliip Company of Now Zealand, they Inning, through their managing director, Mr J. Mills, mado arrangements to purchase the steamer Suva, Avhich they will utilise as a feeder round the different ports, and which is to be at once placed on the line between Alelbourne and Suva. At tho Police Court yesterday J. 31. Massie, formerly Town Clerk and Treasurer, Avas charged Avith having, on or about October 12th. 1881, stolen two debentures, each valued at £100, the property of the City Corporation. His Avife Avas also charged Avith receiving such debentures knoAving them to be stolen. Mr Stout, Avho appeared for the prosecution, stated that altogether the amount involved was £3302, and in applying for a remand he consequently asked for heaA-y bail. The remand Avas granted for a Aveek, and bail alloAved amounting in Alassie's case to £2 100, and in Airs Alassie's case to £2000. It is understood to be alleged tbat Alassie, when Town Clerk some years ago, procured the signatures of the Mayor, See., to what he alleged were duplicate Avatcr debentures, and that these have been disposed of in Alelbourne; also, that the robbery was discovered through the Bank of Ncav Zealand in London. Airs Alassie is alleged to have gone to Alelbourne recently to cash some of the debentures.
