Captain Symonds, late Judge of the Native Lands Court, died on Wednesday night suddenly of heart disease, aged 57. Ho Avas brother to Admiral Sir AVilliam Symonds, and had been Judge since 1.512. Air Ormstcd, special agent of the Pacific Alail Company, waited on the Premier yesterday in reference to the San Francisco mail service. The subject Avas discussed, but a difficulty exists in opening satisfactory negotiations in consequence of the position Avhich Ncav South AVales is in Avith reference to tbe change of Ministry now progressing. Air Ormstcd has just returned from Sydney, Avhere he had an interview Avith the Ngav South AVales Government, but he has met Avith the difficulty mentioned. He will, hoAVCA'er, return to Ncav South AVales shortly, when he hopes, and is led to expect, that the Government there will favorably consider the question of a continuation of the service, but from advices from Sydney there is cvey probability of the AVhite Star line entering the field as competitors for the next contract. At a meeting of the Board of Governors of the College and Grammar School yesterday, the Rev. Thomas Thistle, "ALA., Oxoii., was appointed to the post of classical English master, and Alfred H. High ton, ALA., Cantab, of Adelaide, to the post of master of natural science and mathematics.
