A TOTALISATOR PROPRIETOR ABSCONDS.

DIVIDENDS OF GOLD-MINING COMPANIES. THE RECENT CRICKET MATCH. REVENUE RETURNS. MELBOURNE. This Day. The proprietors of one of the totalisators on the Chunrpion Race has absconded. Two thousand pounds are owing to winners, and the police decline to interfere in the matter. The Melbourne papers agree that the Englishmen's display of cricket in the recent match was disappointing, and all express an opinion that the team was beaten on its merits. Fifty thousand persons paid for admission during the three days play. The various Victorian gold mining companies during the past year paid dividends to the amount of £803,000, being a large increase on the previous year. The quartz mines paid £505,000 and"'alluvial £298,000. Mamitius advices dated the 14th of December, to hand per steamship Natal, report that the weather was favorable to the planters, but labor was scarce. The sugar market was active, and large business was doing for Australia at former prices, which were firmly maintained. The freight market had declined.
