December 28. In its issue this morning the Tiroes publishes a leading article criticising the financial policy of the Australian Colonies, which, it states, should devote its surplus revenue to the prosecution of public works, instead of raising loans for that purpose, and advises that liberal assistance should be extended to persons desiring to emigrate to the colonies. The Right Hon. W. M. Johnston, Q.C., M.P. for Mallow, has been appointed to a Judgeship, and hia seat in the House of Commons has thereby become vacant. Cardinal Newman is suffering from a severe attack of bronchitis. The libel action by Mr John Bell, the well-known sculptor, against Mr Lawes, the proprietor of Vanity Fair, has resulted in a verdict for the plaintiff for £5000 damages. The libel was contained in a statement in which it was alleged that certain works shown by Mr Bell as bis own were really those ot other sculptors.
